NORTHWEST TERRITORIES / FIELD GUIDE

Make room for the journey.

A little preparation opens up a lot of North. Start with a region, choose your experience season, and leave space for conditions to change.

Getting to the NWT

Yellowknife is a common starting point for air travel. Inuvik, Norman Wells and Fort Simpson serve as regional travel hubs. Confirm routes, baggage rules and onward connections with the airline before booking.

Road travel

Plan around fuel, food, ferries and rest stops. Distances can be large and mobile coverage limited. Download maps before departure and check road reports each day. Never treat a map pin as a navigable route.

A South Slave road-trip starting point

Use Hay River as a base, then consider a separate outing to Alexandra Falls in Twin Falls Gorge Territorial Park. Give each stop room in the day. Verify park access, road conditions and services before setting out.

The road to the Arctic coast

Build an Inuvik–Tuktoyaktuk journey around current road conditions, rather than a fixed arrival time. Ask locally about fuel, access and respectful places to visit. The Dempster journey also requires checking Yukon road reports.

Weather, wildfire and flexibility

Keep buffer time for delays and monitor official local notices. Weather can change quickly and wildfire can affect access and air quality. Follow evacuation instructions and closures.

Remote and wilderness travel

Choose trips that fit your skills. Discuss emergency communication, equipment, evacuation arrangements and permits with a guide or land manager. Do not rely on mobile service, this website or its map for navigation.

Respect the people who call this home

Visit as a guest. Seek local guidance before entering community or harvesting areas, ask before photographing people, and follow instructions at cultural sites. Indigenous communities have distinct histories, languages and protocols.

Canadian and international travellers

Confirm travel documents and entry requirements through the Government of Canada. Make arrangements for suitable insurance and check rental-vehicle restrictions before committing to a route.

Access needs

Contact each operator, hotel or land manager about your particular mobility, sensory or dietary needs. An unverified accessibility field means we do not yet have reliable details; it is not a statement that a place is inaccessible.
